Green Bay Police Department Animal Control Team Evidence / Property Room Answers to your Most Frequent Questions Evidence is responsible for maintaining the efficiency of the property room and the integrity of property contained within. Evidence is now staffed with two civilian evidence technicians, Julie Jansch and Mike Gretzinger. Hours of operation were extended to 8 am through 11 pm, Monday through Friday. The additional hours provide more contact with officers, greater efficiency in purging old evidence, and additional hours for the public to pick up evidentiary items to be returned. Evidence records were first entered into a computer system in 1992, with 547 cases entered. The system gives the department the ability to search, itemize, and count the evidence entered. This became even more important as the number of cases increased each year, with 2,215 cases in 2000. Evolving technology over the years, such as DNA, has significantly emphasized the importance of the safe storing of evidence. Cases have been solved in recent years in part due to evidence that has been in storage 20 years or more. This proves that the basic storage of evidence was always done in an appropriate manner, even though procedures have been improved and changed over the years. One recent change was the addition a spacesaver system, which consolidates and stores case evidence materials in a storage area that can double the storage space. The use of this system will eliminate the need for extra storage space, keeping all evidence centralized and reducing security risks. In 2006, even the spacesaver system was strained to capacity necessitating additional space planning for the evidence facility. Due to ever greater evidence storage needs, the Evidence Room has expanded again, taking the place of the Roll Call Room, which was moved to a new location. Evidence Statistics
