  • Current minimum qualifications include:
    • Associate Degree in Fire Protection Technician, Fire Medic or Fire Science.

    • Current certification as a Fire Fighter II by the State of Wisconsin or an IFSAC accredited agency.
    • FVTC CPAT certification obtained within the recruitment year.
    • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • The City of Green Bay reserves the right to invite only the most qualified candidates to participate in the recruitment process.

Step 2: Testing

  • FVTC conducts the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) orientation, practice sessions, and final Candidate Physical Ability Test. CPAT is a practical pass/fail exam used to test a candidate’s physical ability to perform job tasks related to fire fighting.
  • FVTC administers the video-based written exam.

Step 3: Fire Department Panel Interview

  • The first round of interviews is conducted by a panel of Fire Department representatives.

Step 4: Police and Fire Commission Interview

  • The second round of interviews is conducted by the City of Green Bay’s Police and Fire Commission.

Step 5: Eligibility List

  • Successful candidates are placed on the eligibility list. Based upon the candidates’ final composite scores, the top candidate(s) will be subject to a background investigation.
  • The Fire Chief provides the Police and Fire Commission with the results of the background investigations to determine final eligibility and/or ranking on the list.

Step 6: Hiring

  • The Green Bay Metro Fire Department typically hires new recruits once per year, generally in the spring.
  • Conditional offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination.
